If you own your own business and have recently looked into getting a website, you may have heard the term “WordPress”.
What is WordPress?
WordPress is a free open-source content management system…
What does that mean?
Free open-source: It is free to download and install. You do not have to pay to download or use the program.
Content management system (CMS): You can update and maintain your website yourself without having to code HTML/CSS. It has a user friendly interface.
It has hundreds of free templates and plugins to download, install and customize. No need to create a layout from scratch. Just do a quick Google search for “free WordPress templates” and you can spend hours looking at templates/themes that other people have already created. Saves you money and time.
How is it different from a HTML/CSS website?
The main thing is, anyone regardless of coding or web design experience can update and maintain their WordPress website themselves without having to rely on a web person to do every little content change for them.
Why is it so popular?

It is very easy to install. Most hosting companies will install WordPress for you with a click of a button.
There seems to be unlimited support. Any question you may have can get answered by Googling it. Your search results will have YouTube tutorial videos, how to articles and forums of other people with the same questions.
Plugins for WordPress are like what Apps are to your phone. Need a photo gallery? Form? Events Calendar? There’s a plugin for that! Search for it, install it, make some minor changes to customize it for your site and bam! Its done. No need to create any of those from scratch.
Themes are also “templates”. There are hundreds of free already designed themes for WordPress. There is a couple more hundred of themes that you can purchase, most are under $50. Add in your logo, images and content and your site is done.
